milk and sugar (shatto's 10th birthday & event)

I became rather excited when I was contacted to help promote Shatto's 10th anniversary party, and their release of their "Home" Birthday Cake milk. Shatto Milk Company is a local, family-owned dairy farm in the Kansas City area, which produces the freshest milk products without using recombinant bovine somatotropin or recombinant bovine growth hormone. Their processing plant is also open to the public, for those to see where exactly their milk is coming from. Which, with just switching back to being a vegetarian, is great to know the whereabouts where my milk is coming from.
In celebration of their 10th birthday, Shatto is partnering with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. If you are not familiar with this charity, they provide housing for those families whose children are in need of medical treatment for temporary stay. With this event, they are hoping to raise profit for building a third house, along with the 20% of sales that from customers purchasing the Birthday Cake milk.

All proceeds from the event ticket sales will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City, and the food and drinks will be served by many local eateries (The Local Pig, The West Side Local, Farm to Market, etc). You can purchase tickets for the event that takes place on October 10th  and purchase Shatto's Birthday Cake milk (while in stock) in these locations around Kansas City.
With being lactose intolerant for most of my life and a vegan for the past few years, I can say I've honestly never had a desire to sit and drink a glass of milk. I poured myself a small glass of the Shatto Birthday Cake milk, and I had the want to drink straight from the bottle. Although, saving myself from stomach aches, I ended up saving the milk for a later day. I end up finishing the rest of my Birthday Cake milk in some steel cut oats and the entire bowl tasted like delicious dessert. I'm glad I had the chance to try something so sweet that normally in the past I would have never tried, while giving back a percent to those in need.

sponsor introduction: ptarmigan

I always love when I discover and fall in love with new businesses that advertise on Hello, Mr. Rabbit. This month, I am proud to bring you Ptarmigan a classic country side inspired boutique based out of the United Kingdom, with an online shop as well that ships internationally. Their classic approach to work-wear inspired clothing and rustic feel had me drawn in at first sight.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Edward Lewis, the owner of
Ptarmigan, on what Ptarmigan stands for and how it was developed. I hope readers can gather inspiration from his interview and browse their online collections that are perfect for the fall season. Enjoy!

(Lindsey) What was the idea behind the company's name, Ptarmigan? (Edward) "The Ptarmigan is a game bird seen in the UK; a lot of our clothing is specifically designed for those in traditional countryside job roles: farmers, and game keepers for example. We think the Ptarmigan is a feature and a reminder of the countryside, and a great symbol. Other people who buy our clothing might be walkers, ramblers, hikers and horse riders, and they too will associate the Ptarmigan with traditions and the countryside."

How would you define the Ptarmigan woman/man? "They need their clothing to be practical and well built, as they're generally often outdoors exploring or working. They're also passionate about heritage and tradition, and will often shop with brands they trust to give them the excellent craftsmanship and quality they rely on. They're also conscious of style and good tailoring, they need to look smart and feel proud in their work-wear  and they know outdoor clothing doesn't need to be unfashionable."

How do you decide on the brands you sell at Ptarmigan? "We choose brands who are heritage brands. Usually they have a lot of history behind them, and some of the brands we stock have been around since the 1900s. Many of them started out of a small market stall, and have grown their brands into huge multinationals - but they never forget that craftsmanship is important, and many of the brands have workshops where their products are produced by hand."

What are some of your goals for Ptarmigan? "We'd like to promote the countryside, and help small independent businesses grow, and we'd like to support tradition. In an age of huge superstores and sweatshops where clothing is produced, we need to champion the smaller brands who are still passionate about creating great quality."

What are some of the inspirations that guide Ptarmigan? "We think about the people who use our clothes, and what they need those clothes to do, so if they need practical clothes that serve a purpose, that's what we'll look to supply."

How does Ptarmigan differ from other clothing and accessories companies? "We're a small store, independent and we only work with heritage brands who truly believe in their products. We like brands who care about what they produce, and they're not necessarily trend led, they're more about timeless pieces."

What is one quote that you believe describes your vision of Ptarmigan? "Quality over quantity!"

made at home: simple scrub

These winter months can make for dry skin, which I know I have personally been experiencing after mass amounts of snow and drastic climate changes. Exfoliating using scrubs is perfect to slough away dead skin cells and moisturize the skin. I am pleased to bring all of my readers a "simple scrub" that is made with only three ingredients that can be found always in your kitchen!
This recipe was given to me by my dear friend, and Skin-Care Therapist at Hagoyah salon (which is one of my sponsors this month!), Caprice. I received a facial from her earlier in the month, right after her salon opened in the Waldo district of Kansas City. Any local readers out there should check out Hagoyah, and the facials they offer. I completely enjoyed mine, which was a peach clay mask, and did my skin wonders!

Simple Exfoliating Scrub
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of your choice: almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, etc. (I used olive oil!)
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

Tips for Scrubs and Facials:

  • Use this scrub while in the shower. This steam will help get rid of the dead skin cells.
  • Always use a scrub before applying a facial.
  • While applying the scrub, use a circle massaging hand movement.
  • Wash off the scrub with cool water and pat your face dry with a towel.

A huge thanks to Caprice for providing me with this recipe! Follow her on twitter for daily skin tips and other useful information regrading facials.

sponsor introduction: floating canopy

Hello readers! I am so pleased that I have the pleasure to introduce one of my lovely February sponsors to you, Stephanie Priscilla of Floating Canopy. I found her through her instagram, and fell in love with her artwork right away.
Stephanie is an animation student from LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. She has been in love with animation since she was extremely young, from watching Disney's animation films. Her illustrations are mostly inspired by nature. Her classmates say her style is a bit dreamy, because she adores children storybooks and fairy-tales. She always has a certain message behind the images that she creates.

What is your favorite medium to work with? "My favorite medium is watercolor. It's the most comfortable medium and I've never learnt it before in my life. It just comes naturally. But recently I'm starting to like digital painting too."

Do you have a favorite piece you have created? "My favourite piece I have would probably the latest work because it may courage people to always try to stand up again when you fell down to the ground. I made that illustration because of what happened earlier today. Me and my classmates were all really tired of our workload in college but if we do something good I always believe we must try to make it work every time we fall apart."

What artists inspire you? What other elements inspire you, as well? "I'm a big fan of Mark Ryden's artwork as for a painter. In other sides, I really love Oliver Jeffers and Jon Klassen for children storybook. They are all so amazing."

Do you plan to pursue art as a career? "I plan to be character designer if one day I work in an animation company. The other choices will be either become a children book illustrator or open a shop full of my illustrations printed in gift cards, notebooks, etc and hope that people will like it."

Do you create in a certain place? "Normally, I will do my artwork at home after I come back home from college. Definitely, I like to listen to music when I do my artwork. My personal favorite genre will be folk. I love to listen to Avalanche City, Sea Wolf, etc. Some of the local band from my hometown are also really nice like Stars and Rabbit, The Trees and The Wild, and Angsa dan Serigala. Sometimes I will go to a cafe and bring my sketchbook. I will drink tea and draw there."

How do you believe you stand out as an artist? "Well, I believe in not just making an artwork. I'm trying to tell a certain message behind of what I create. I apply the things I learnt as an animation student as well. A friend of mind once say there is no originality in this world anymore, but just being different is the key. There's a certain style that will remain in every character that I make."

(how I displayed my two prints Stephanie sent me! one in my craft room, the other in my dining room.)

Find more of Stephanie's artwork on Floating Canopy, and follow her instagram for daily updates of her work. If you are interested in her artwork, contact her here:  stephanie.priscilla(at)yahoo(dot)com. (She sent me two variations on the first featured "Fox Bride" print, they are grander in person.)
